A lifetime of improved oral health has meant that many new admissions to aged care providers still have their natural teeth.
- Many caregivers are unable to correctly care for natural teeth due their lack of knowledge and experience in doing so
- Residents tend to be immobile and unable to attend a dental clinic
- Food in aged care centres is predominately prepared to tempt the appetite of the elderly, so is often sweet and soft
- Centres are unlikely to be associated with dental care providers, with no regular visits, care and screening being undertaken of residents
With dentures predominately featuring in nursing homes for many years, nursing staff had ensured they were cared for appropriately. Unfortunately, it’s been reported on the ABC website that this is not the case for natural teeth.
Reported Concerns About Elderly Oral Decay
It was suggested that to improve the oral health of the elderly within nursing homes, training staff on the subject and organising a mobile dentist is essential to prevent unnecessary damage occurring.
