Halitosis is most commonly known as bad breath. It affects a surprising number of people, given that there are many ways to combat it – not just brushing, flossing, using mouthwash or tongue scraping.
Halitosis
Find out more about why it happens and how to effectively treat it.
- Halitosis is most often caused by bacteria breaking down food particles, decayed teeth and gum disease. It can also sometimes be due to certain medications, or stomach or throat problems.
- A dry mouth can make the problem worse; late morning and late afternoon seem to be particularly bad times of day.
- The physical problem of bad breath is often less problematic than the psychological ones it causes, through interfering with social interactions.
- Most bad breath can be treated by maintaining good oral hygiene, most importantly by having regular check-ups with your dentist.
- Quitting smoking is highly recommended, too. Read more about smoking and oral health.
- Good oral hygiene includes regularly brushing teeth, flossing, using mouthwash, and changing your toothbrush.
- It can also be helpful to brush or scrape your tongue, stay hydrated and be mindful of what you eat – onion and garlic should be avoided in favour of things like citrus rind, fresh herbs, and cloves.
